My Ocarina sounds awful
« on: May 20, 2015, 12:21:50 PM »
First sorry for my bad englisch, iam from germany.

I got an ocarina by gift. I tried to play it by watching movies on youtube. But it sound so awful. I have the same ocarina like in the video. And it's sound exactly like the ocarina in the video.

Is the ocarina broken or am i doing something wrong? I hope somebody can help me.
Ich würde gerne die Welt verändern, doch Gott gibt mir den Quellcode nicht.

Practicing articulation will help your playing. When you play a note move your tongue as if you are saying "Too". At the start of the note the tip of your tongue should be touching the roof of your mouth. As your are blowing drop your tongue to the middle of your mouth, like when you are saying "oo". At the end of the note put the tip of your tongue back at the roof of your mouth. This will stop your breath quickly for a clear, short note. Also it will get your mouth ready to play the next note.

Make sure to keep your lips tight around the mouthpiece, and dont' let any air come out your nose.

Once you get comfortable with saying "Too" you might want to look at thread discussing breathing technique.

Also check out this video showing different articulation techniques.

It's possible you picked up a knockoff STL ocarina. Ebay and Amazon are no longer safe places to buy some products and unless you're purchasing from STL directly, you could get a really bad ocarina.  If you bought it directly via the STL website, then Pickle's advice is a great start.
